Be sure to use thin layers of paint and allow each layer to dry completely before adding another, as thick layers of paint may crack or peel off after shrinking. The colors will intensify and become more vibrant as the plastic shrinks, creating a beautiful finished product. So remember to position the drawing inked-side up on the tray. Then press a sheet of paper or cardboard on top of the Shrinky Dinks and lightly press flat (I used a small book to weigh it down). I lowered the temperature to 300 degrees Fahrenheit (148 degrees Celsius) in the following batches (no smoke…YAY!). When the timer rang, I put in the tray with the Shrinky Dinks and set the timer to 3 minutes (the baking time indicated https://shrinky-dink.com/ in the instructions were 1-3 minutes).

In the past we posted a tutorial on how to use the iconic childhood craft supply, Perler beads, to create a fun and unique earring holder (check it out here). Trust the process; the heat will condense those colors back to their full, rich intent. This is particularly useful for adding highlights or metallic accents that a standard inkjet printer cannot produce. If you notice the colors running or blurring into one another, it is often a sign of “over-inking.” This happens when the printer settings are putting down more ink than the matte coating can absorb. Even with the right materials, you may encounter obstacles.
Print & Trace the Template
You can also use colored pencils if that is easier. White or semi-transparent shrink paper produces vibrant colors and sharp prints. Some kits come with extra accessories like keychains, earring hooks, and punches, providing a complete crafting experience without needing additional purchases. Some products provide detailed instructions or double-sided usability which enhances creative options. Always print on the frosted side for better ink adhesion and color vibrancy. Printable shrink paper usually has one frosted side for printing and one smooth/glossy side.
To make the initial a little wider to make a sturdier keychain, we can add a border using the “Offset” function. Once they are both selected, click “Flatten” on the lower right menu to turn the selection into a Print Then Cut group! The last step is to select both the sunflower and the letter by clicking and dragging a box over top of both.

Me, as a busy mom, I am always looking for fun and creative ways to spend quality time with my kids. I remember being a kid and spending hours creating colorful and unique designs on small sheets of plastic that would magically shrink in the oven. The process is simple.
Materials to Make DIY Shrinky Dinks
They are perfectly sized for a sheet of printable shrinky dink paper. Perhaps it was a batch or perhaps the new production of printable shrinky dink paper just isn’t what it used to be. With that came a bad batch of printable shrinky dink paper. Since shrinky dink paper tends to make colors appear darker and more vibrant after shrinking, adjusting your image’s colors beforehand is useful. Therefore, when loading shrinky dink paper into the printer, please remember to print on the matte side.
